There have been many and to spare studies which show that adults, teens and even pre-teens who drink sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) in their diet are statistically more obese. Now, finally, we’ve got relevant data for 9 month to 5 year olds too.

The last flu season was perhaps the worst flu season in the past 10 years. Almost every state in the US reported widespread outbreaks causing disruption and other effects on health care providers, hospitals, schools and industry. In most of our practices, questions about children’s bedtimes are one of the most frequent queries from parents pediatricians receive. And, I thought we had just about covered it until I heard about some new research on: NO bedtimes — or better said, no specific time for bed.

It seems as though we are in a bit of a trend here with posts about children’s contact sports. It has to do with the fact that I’ve needed to give out advice to parents for years with very little in the way of scientific literature to go on and now we seem to be swimming with research studies.

What has been a terribly understudied area of medicine is now slowly gaining momentum and can possibly save lives: Concussions, Head Injuries, Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) and Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE).

Talk about proving the obvious, and then giving a lecture about it – lack of adequate sleep actually… wait for it… increases a teens risk of athletic injuries!
A study reported on at the National Academy of Pediatric Conference (Oct, 2012) showed that teens not sleeping enough had substantially more athletic injuries.

In case you were thinking that trampolines have gotten safe enough to warrant spending your hard earned cash on one for your kids – they haven’t… so don’t.
The American Academy of Pediatrics has again reviewed all the safety and childhood injury data and has reaffirmed it’s position against their recreational use by children.

Anne Kirchhoff at the Huntsman Cancer Center in Salt Lake City (et. al.) published some disappointing news in the journal Cancer (Sep 24, 2012) about adolescent and young adult cancer survivors (AYA): they’re skipping essential doctor’s visits because they can’t afford them!
